Modoolo — A Puzzle Game Built on the Modulo Operator

A mobile puzzle game in Godot 4.5 with a Rust backend for user-generated levels. Modulo arithmetic as gameplay — surprisingly deep, surprisingly addictive.

What Modoolo is

Modoolo takes an operator most people meet briefly in CS class — %, the modulo — and turns it into a mobile puzzle game. Players solve levels by arranging tiles so that, when divided with remainder, the right conditions emerge. It sounds theoretical and ends up surprisingly tactile once you've played through the first ten levels.

Stack

  • Game. Godot 4.5 with the mobile renderer, GDScript, landscape orientation. Localised in German and English.
  • API. Rust with axum, SeaORM and an OpenAPI schema documented via Scalar. Local dev on SQLite, production on PostgreSQL.
  • Hosting. Container builds via GitHub Actions, pushes to Scaleway Container Registry and GHCR. Deployment on Scaleway Kubernetes.
  • Level sharing. Players build their own levels and share them via the REST API; UUID slugs for unmistakable URLs, paginated list endpoints for in-game discovery.

Status

Active development. An early build is live on the Play Store. The repo is private — once the game survives onboarding and the first real play sessions in beta tests show we're onto something durable, the full release rolls out to the stores.

Why we build this

Building games is the most honest test of your own engineering discipline. There's no client who will accept the rough edge; the feel of play decides on its own. Modoolo is also our playground for a stack combination we haven't shipped commercially: Godot as the engine, Rust as the service layer.
